A psychiatrist is a doctor. His medical training of at least 6 years enables him to exclude a somatic cause for an a priori psychiatric set of problems.

In Switzerland, following his medical training of 6 years, he follows dual postgraduate training, namely in psychiatry and psychotherapy . This training, lasting at least 6 additional years, ends with an exam at the end of which he gains the qualification of FMH Specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy .
